In China, six people have been jailed after watching a video of a woman chained around her neck.
BEIJING: A Chinese court sentenced six people to up to 11 years in prison last year for abusing a woman who appeared in an online video with chains around her neck, sparking public outcry and calling for greater protection for women.
The video, released in January of last year, shows a woman in the eastern province of Jiangsu feeling confused. It was seen by millions of people and sparked debate about the treatment of women, especially bride trafficking in rural areas.
Jiangsu Xuzhou Intermediate People’s Court said in a statement on Friday that a man named Dong Zhimin bought the woman for 5,000 yuan (US$727.26) and kept her chained in a room without sun, electricity or running water since 2017. 7).
The court said Dong was sentenced Thursday to nine years in prison for abuse and illegal imprisonment.
A woman suffering from schizophrenia was sold twice before going to Dong. She had eight children while living with Dong from 1999 to 2020, the court said.
Another five people who trafficked her were sentenced to eight to 11 years in prison for trafficking women, the court said.
